[You're on a train. Did you catch a glimpse of someone familiar out the window? Well, never mind that. The train's starting to move, and soon you'll be home, if you can even still call it home. Meanwhile, a late boarder silently takes seat next to you.]

[The buzzing of his phone distracted him, and by the time he has the chance to look again, the familiar face is gone, the platform emptying out.

Well, it was probably just his imagination anyway.

Ren pulls down the blind over the window and takes off his glasses, closing his eyes to rest for the remainder of the journey. He doesn't so much as glance at the person taking the seat next to him; he just wants to relax while he can.]

[It's tempting to tap him on the shoulder, but funnier to wait until noticed. For now, Akechi will read the book that he brought.]

[Morgana is no help in this situation, the black cat tucked away asleep in the bag at his feet. He doesn't doze off for long, though, because after ten minutes, there's an announcement on the intercom that jerks him awake.

He scrubs at his eyes and yawns, peering bearily around to check which stop they're approaching next, when his eyes fall on Akechi.

Oh.]

Mornin'.

[Holds out a container of Jagariko]

Travel snack?

[He takes one, munching on it absently, when he seems to notice this is, in fact, a thing that is happening.]

[It's been a long day. Between studying for her entrance exams and wrangling Ryuji to get him to concentrate on his schoolwork, Makoto hasn't had much time to focus on anything else. She's in full "mom" mode right now, so naturally her first question to Ren is:]

Have you started studying for finals?

[She's exhausted and probably looks it too. Any longer in the library and her persona might turn into a book.]

Yeah, I started last week. [He knows he tends to get lumped in with Ryuji and Ann and their study habits (or lack thereof), but he's actually trying hard to keep up his studies. It keeps Sojiro happy, and it throws suspicion off him if he acts like a model student, too.

He looks Makoto over once and asks,]

I should ask whether you've stopped studying for finals.

I can stop when they're over. [Which..yeah. She's well aware she's being a robot again, but there's still a bit of sis in the back of her mind, nagging her to go to a good school and go further in the world.] Maybe I need a little help?

[Not with studying. She's done it enough to be an honor student, but the fun thing? She's never really known how to do that.]

Help me?

Of course. I'm always here for you.

[And he could use the break from studying, too, though admittedly not as much as she needs it.]

Want to go to Dome Town? There's something I have in mind.

Something you have in mind? It's not the throw up rides, is it?

[She might be able to take it though, given that she's never had a weak stomach.]

What are you planning?

No, not this time. What do you think about bowling?

[It's fun, and something she might actually be good at, compared to struggling through something like an arcade game.]

There's a bar there too, so we can relax with a drink after.

Yeah, it looks like we got lucky. It's usually busier than this around this time.

[Ren already had and finished a drink in the time it took for her to get here, so he's picking up a menu and scanning it to order something else.]

Is there anything you want? I can pay.

Oh, um... [It's not a total surprise, just a bit of one. She'd be fine with paying for her own, but...

(Not a date)] I was thinking milk tea sounded good right now. You don't have to pay for it, though.

I don't mind. Maybe you can spot me a drink next time?

[Next time as in, totally not another date.

Regardless, he's already getting up to order her a milk tea, and fruit tea for himself. It doesn't take long given it's less busy today, so he's back within a minute.]

They'll bring our drinks over.

That... sounds like a good idea.

[She's definitely more focused on the idea of being able to repay him and keep things even than... well, the implication that they might be going on another date later. Er, for all this isn't a date.

When he returns, she nods. She has her notebook up and open, and the math book opened to a tabbed page. She nods as he returns and sits back in the booth.] Good. Was there anything about what you're studying you're stuck on?

There's a few example sentences here... Some of them are easy, but others I'm not so sure on.

[He turns the book so she can see a sentence he's particularly stumped on: "The manager said his team ____ win the soccer league and they actually did ____ season."]

Is the first word "would" or "will"? I guess it's in past tense, so "would" sounds correct, but he's talking about a future soccer league, so maybe future tense?

The second blank gives the option, "the next" season or "next". Is there really a difference?

[This is the kind of technical question he'd ask Makoto's advice on rather than Ann, who can speak fluent English but who wouldn't exactly be able to pin down the nuts and bolts of grammar.]
