[ standing in front of 'Desire', Mary appears to be quite transfixed by the painting, gazing at it with avid attention. She reaches out to tug on the sleeve of the person nearest to her. ]

Hey, what are those red things supposed to be? [ and without waiting for an answer: ] They're rose petals, right?

[Yusuke looks slightly alarmed when he feels someone grab his sleeve, but he relaxes a little when he realises it's just a visitor with a question.]

W-well, yes, that is one such interpretation. However... they also resemble bloodstains dripped around the edges of the canvas, would you not agree? [He looks from the painting, then to Mary.] What may appear beautiful at first glance can also be threatening.

[ she glances up at Yusuke. He's so tall! He reminds her of someone she knows... no, knew. With a bright but not exactly warm smile, she lets go of his sleeve like she's tossing away a crumpled piece of paper. ]

Hmm... [ she moves closer to the painting until she almost bumps into the frame, peering at it with her hands clasped tight behind her back. He's right—the Ladies in the gallery are beautiful and terrifying all at once—but Mary feels like being contrary. ] So it's supposed to be scary? Isn't this called 'Desire'? Why would anyone want to be scared?

[Yusuke huffs, brushing off his sleeve and straightening it. So rude...! Though at least she's interested in his art. He's about to object to her getting so close to the painting, but she doesn't actually touch it.]

Many of humanity's worst sins can be traced back to an excess of desire. To those innocent of such evil things, it may be difficult to understand... but it is an unfortunate truth that many of the most dangerous people in this world act because they are driven by those desires.

[ she frowns as she listens. As young and sheltered from the world ( literally ) as Mary is, Yusuke's explanation doesn't make much sense to her. Are the things she did to get out of the gallery 'sins' or 'evil' just because she wanted to leave so badly? ]

You're lying. I just wanted to make friends and have a family. I'm not dangerous. [ at least not the way she sees it. The faint distress disappearing from her features, Mary makes a scornful face at the painting. ] The artist should have called this something else.

[His expression tightens into a frown, but otherwise he says nothing. That kind of unprompted denial is the kind that only a guilty party can give, after all, but he knows nothing about her. And... well, she's young. She could have easily just misunderstood his explanation.]

Actually, I'm the artist. [He'll let her previous comment slide for now, folding his arms.] If you had the choice, what would you name it, Miss...?

Ah...!

[ no, not her name — but she starts when Yusuke claims the painting as his. Turning away from it in a whirl of green skirts, she gazes at him with wide eyes, her earlier moodiness seemingly forgotten. ]

I'm Mary. You painted this? [ she looks him up and down. ] But you're not old!

Hm? You needn't act so surprised; not all painters are old.

[Her innocent reaction is rather a contrast to how she was only moments ago. What an interesting girl...]

Actually, I'm still just a student of art. I have much to learn.
