One benefit to being socially clueless, painful though it is at times, is that he doesn't get hung up on things like trying to figure out Ryuji's expectations, nor the conventions of a "date". Ryuji wanted to spend time with him, and it just happened to be in a way that is more intimate than friendship. That didn't mean Yusuke felt the need to stop being... well, Yusuke, just as he expects Ryuji to be no less himself. Right?
