[ quiet's habit of hide and seek throughout the base gives her freedom, slipping through the bars with her disappearing act now and then. interesting things happen in mother base, one simply needs to make sure they're looking. for example , spying a certain young man nearby walking her way.

quiet doesn't remember eli being in line during the necklace incident, but she remembers that he plays with knives. ]

[Eli's up to no good as usual. Today he's swaggering along the platform with his pockets laden down with... something. He hasn't spotted Quiet yet, but the way he occasionally keeps looking over his shoulder, it's clear he doesn't want to get caught.

Stop him, or keep watching, Quiet?]

[Kaz stopped in his tracks along the walkway of the Command Platform to stare upon the form of Eli. The blond boy stood out a mile against the other kids. His jacket and hair colour all helped to show him off for the boy he was. Kaz gripped his crutch with his good and only hand and moved softly towards the troubled youth.]

Eli.

[Eli heard him coming a mile off, too -- the noise of the crutch along the platform was hard to miss. He was hoping Kaz would just leave him alone, though, so when he speaks to him, he tenses in anger.]

Don't call me that.

You prefer "the White Mamba?"

[Because Kaz didn't want to disrespect the kid. He was a guest on Mother Base after all, even though his behaviour was more than to be desired. Kaz felt sorry for him and the other kids; it wasn't their fault war had shaped them into the boys they were.]

I'm not your enemy.

[Eli just stares at him distrustfully, and doesn't answer the question. You adults think you know everything, Kaz, figure it out for yourself.]

What do you want?

I was about to ask you the same thing. [He narrowed his eyes at the boy and wondered what he was doing walking around Mother Base on his own. Did he still have that knife? Ocelot should have taken it off him by now surely...]

You were supposed to be with Ocelot.

[If he does have a knife on him, it's hidden out of sight, at any rate.]

I can go wherever I like.

[Which obviously isn't true, given how long he's been trapped on the base. But fake bravado keeps his pride intact.]

[Kaz didn't want to start an argument with Eli, since what would be the point in that? He was an angry kid. Born into war and he knew nothing much else. Diamond Dogs existed to create better lives, right? Kaz just frowned at Eli's words.]

Where did you think you were going?

Are you going to go crying to my father if I tell you?

[He narrows his eyes, his tone mocking. If Kaz is observant he'd have noticed that before their conversation, Eli had been looking toward the bridge that connects to the R&D platform.

As usual, he's planning nothing good.]

I don't go crying to anyone. [Kaz's tone sharpened at that. Did he know about them both? How close they were? He didn't even want to find out if Eli had been spying on them both.]

You're a grown boy, you tell me.

[Kaz is the second in command. That they're close is no secret, and certainly not for someone versed in military knowledge beyond his years like Eli.]

I wanted to go for a walk. I'm sick of being stuck on the same platform all the time.

[Kaz liked to keep his relationship with Boss secret and out of the prying eyes of the other men. If Eli knew then who else?]

You should learn to do as you're told and appreciate your surroundings wherever you are. [Because the kid didn't have a real father to tell him off. Would Boss do that? Kaz highly doubted it.]

Go to hell.

[Eli spits at Kaz's feet. Foot singular. Whichever. He figures he's already in trouble from wandering away from Ocelot, what's the harm in a little more defiance? They'll punish him either way.]

I'll never take orders from you, or Father, or anyone else.

If I had both hands I'd give you a beating for answering a superior officer back. But, I doubt that would make you see things any clearer. [Kaz just clenched his crutch until his hand went white. Why did he have to be so difficult?]

You take orders from no one but yourself, right? Then, what orders might they be?

[Eli's hands ball into fists at the threat, his expression darkening with rage.]

You're all the same! [Adults, he means. One minute they want him to trust them, the next they want to beat him for saying something out of line. Typical.]

You're not my superior. I won't tell you anything.

I never claimed to be your superior. People learn to take orders so that we keep the balance of peace around here. Chaos only breeds rebellion and death.

[Maybe that's something you enjoy but Kaz doesn't.]

You're a guest on here, so you'd better get used to accepting life on Mother Base.

[Eli says nothing, and merely shoots Kaz a resentful glare. Then he moves to the edge of the platform, to the railings, looking out at the sea. He's counting the days until he can finally get off this lump of metal. Yet another lecture isn't going to change his mind.]

[For one horrifying moment Kaz thought the boy was going to jump into the sea. He went to move to attempt to grab him but stalled that thought. No, why would he drown himself? He may be angry but he wasn't suicidal. He was just a kid. A confused, angry kid. Kaz wanted to help him and all the other kids but how? He was a soldier, not the boy's father.]

Sometimes learning lessons when you're young can aid you when you grow up.

You're wrong. [Eli clenched his hand on the rail, and turned to glare over his shoulder at Kaz.]

You keep saying I should learn to follow orders. My men -- the ones you took hostage with me. They were starving to death before I found them. All because they were following orders, and then when their commanders died, they didn't know what to do. They couldn't survive without someone in charge.

I won't be like that. What I've learned is that I'll never depend on anyone but myself.

[Kaz stiffened but did not retort back with any anger this time. He wanted to listen to Eli and try to understand the suffering the boy had endured because he had. All those boys had. No parents, no guidance. Just the African wilderness and guns at their disposal. That was no life for a child.]

Then I'm sorry that adults have failed you. The Boss and I we want to try and guide you towards a better future, not to let you think we don't care because we do. Yet, you're a strong young man, Eli with your own ideals. Can we get in the way of that? I doubt it.
